Prepping Your RV for a Trip? There’s Something You Need to Check

Spring is basically here, and it’s time to pull that RV out of storage and get it prepped for your next trip. You have your lists of things to check and pack, but if you overlook this item you may find yourself stuck on the side of the road.

Whether you’ve had your motorhome for one, five, or 20 years, that engine under the hood is still the most important piece of equipment in your vehicle. You may be saying “Yes, I know that,” to yourself, but there is another part of your RV that can drastically reduce your engine’s performance and life. That would be your motorhome’s charge air cooler.

A leaking charge air cooler can cause numerous problems. In the short term it will result in lower power and reduced fuel economy. Long term, it can cause significant damage to your engine to the point of having to completely replace the engine. That’s the last thing you want to be worried about when you’re supposed to be off camping and having a good time.

Thankfully, it is pretty easy to test your charge air cooler for leaks. You just need a test kit, that will let you test the cooler while it is still on the vehicle. Follow the instructions that come with the kit and it will let you know if you have a leak.

What if I do Have a Leak or Have Noticed a Loss of Power?

If you’re certain you have a leaking charge air cooler or you think you need to change it out just to be on the safe side, you have a couple of options. You can either buy a brand new unit to replace your existing one, or have your existing unit re-core’d. We manufacture and carry a wide range of motorhome charge air coolers that are all designed to be exact fit, OEM replacements. That means they will fit in place without needing any additional mounting kits or modifications. Just remove the existing one and slide the new one in place.

If the tanks on your existing unit are in good shape, then you can have your unit re-core’d instead and save a little money. Re-coring involves removing the tanks off the existing unit and replacing the core of the charge air cooler with a brand new one. This eliminates all the existing failed and weakened areas of the core. The old tanks will be attached to the new core giving you a like-new unit.
